Rusedski to play on next year

British tennis star Greg Rusedski says he will put off retirement and play on next season and wants to continue to represent his country in the Davis Cup.Rusedski is currently in Aberdeen competing in the annual England versus Scotland match which takes a similar structure to the Davis Cup event. The Canadian born Brit said: ‘I’m definitely going to play next year. I don’t know how much. I’ve spoken to John Lloyd [Davis Cup captain] and if selected, I’d love to play in Birmingham. I am already really looking forward to it, in terms of playing in

front of a home crowd.’Britain will take on Holland in the Euro-Africa zone group one tie in April and must win the match to progress into the world group. With Tim Henman unsure if he will play Davis Cup again it seems likely that Lloyd will have to call on Rusedski to support current British number one Andy Murray.Rusedski explained his plans further, saying: ‘To maintain my fitness, I will try to get a few wild cards to events. If I have to, I will play a few smaller events, maybe some Challengers.’Rusedski is currently rankled 193 in the world and would have to qualify for most of the major tournaments and is clearly targeting the Davis Cup as an event he can contribute his best efforts to. ‘I enjoy my tennis and it’s difficult to know when to call it a day. I am closer to the end, I know that,’ he concluded.© 2006 Adfero Ltd.
