WORLD World Cup-winning captain, Diego Maradona, has arrived here for the Davis Cup final between Russia and Argentina.
“His plane just landed, so he’ll attend the (Davis Cup) final to root for Argentina,” said Diego Gomez, a spokesman for the Argentina Davis Cup team.
The Argies, bidding for a first Cup win, take on the 2002 champion at Moscow’s Olympic arena from tonight (AEDT).
Maradona has become a big tennis fan, and has already attended several Argentina ties.
His last visit to Russia was in 1990, when his then Italy Serie A side Napoli lost to Spartak Moscow in the European Cup.
Russia will have its own celebrity supporter, as former President Boris Yeltsin will attend all three days of the final, team captain Shamil Tarpishchev said overnight.
Yeltsin, an avid tennis follower, has been to all of his country’s home matches in recent years.
