SOPHIE Ferguson notched a major upset in the first round of the Australian Women’s Hardcourt tournament on the Gold Coast today, defeating No.8 seed and dual champion Ai Sugiyama in straight sets.
The Sydney wildcard defeated her more highly rated Japanese opponent 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 in 92 minutes.
Ferguson is on target to play fellow Australian Samantha Stosur, who starts her campaign when she takes on Shuai Peng from China tomorrow evening.
