Henin, Serena will tangle for Miami title on Saturday

Miami, FL - You couldn’t have asked for a better women’s final at the 2007 Sony Ericsson Open, as Saturday’s showdown here will pit bitter rivals Justine Henin and Serena Williams against one another at Crandon Park. The two stars are arguably the top two players on the WTA Tour.The currently top-ranked Henin, seeded second here in Miami, and 13th-seeded Williams will meet for a ninth time, with the powerful American holding a 5-3 lifetime advantage. They’ve never met here in Miami, where Williams captured back-to-back-to-back titles from 2002-04

and was the runner-up in 1999. Henin is appearing in her first-ever Miami finale.The reigning two-time French Open champion Henin and 2007 Australian Open titlist Williams have not met since the American prevailed in a Wimbledon semifinal four years ago. Henin, however, has won two of their last three matchups.The 24-year-old Henin is 2-1 versus the 25-year-old Williams in finals, with the victories coming in Berlin in 2002 and Charleston in 2003. Williams’ victory came in a title bout in Rome in’02.The five-time Grand Slam titlist Henin, who reached all four Grand Slam finals last season, has won her last 13 matches overall, including recent titles in Dubai and Doha. She is 2-0 in her 2007 finals and owns 31 titles after appearing in 45 previous title bouts.The former world No. 1 Williams, currently riding a 12-match overall winning streak, is 27-10 in her career finals, including the title run in Melbourne two months ago.The winner of this $3.45 million event will collect $492,950.© 2007 The Sports Network
