LLEYTON Hewitt faces Argentina’s Guillermo Canas for a place in the round of 16 at Wimbledon tonight (AEST).
The No.16 seed leads No.22 seed Canas 5-2 head-to-head, and has won both their meetings on grass, but has not played the resurgent world No.17 in five years.
Australia’s Wayne Arthurs, 36, will take on Sweden’s 35-year-old Jonas Bjorkman in a third-round battle of the veterans.
Qualfier Arthurs and No.19 seed Bjorkman take the jokes about their age in their stride, even wearing the over-30s tag as a badge of honour.
“Over-30s are doing pretty well,” said Arthurs, who is ranked 195th in the world.
“It’s a testament to probably our bodies that we’ve been able to last for so long.”
World No.35 Bjorkman agreed. “It’s an excitement in us, a little thrill inside the body that we still can go out and compete with the youngsters who are just under 20 or just past 20 and still show that we can still play some good tennis,” he said.
Arthurs is also playing doubles and teamed with American Justin Gimelstob for a 6-4 6-3 6-2 win over Italy’s Simone Bolelli and Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro overnight.
They will take on second-round opponents, Germany’s Christopher Kas and Austria’s Alexander Peya after Arthurs plays his singles match.
Also in action overnight, French Open champions and No.6 seeds Alicia Molik and Italy’s Mara Santangelo beat American Corina Morariu and Patty Schnyder from Switzerland 6-1 6-3 in the women’s doubles first round.
Top seeds Samantha Stosur and American Lisa Raymond defeated France’s Stephanie Foretz and Selima Sfar, from Tunisia, 6-2 6-4 in the second round.
Nicole Pratt and France partner Emilie Loit won their first-round match with the Ukraine’s Yuliana Fedak and Kaia Kanepi, from Estonia, 6-2 2-6 7-5.
