ARGENTINA’S unseeded Mariano Zabaleta beat Spain’s Nicolas Almagro, the No.6 seed, 6-3 7-5 in a first-round, Polish Open upset overnight.

But comaptriot Gaston Gaudio, the 2004 French Open champion, was the victim of another surprise, slumping to a 6-2 6-0 defeat by Belgium’s Steve Darcis.

Zabaleta, 29, No.85 in the ATP rankings, was too good for the 21-year-old, ranked 54 places above him, on the clay of northern Poland.

Beaten in straight sets by Almagro in Acapulco earlier this year, Zabaleta forced him into a series of errors to set up a second-round meeting with another Spaniard, Albert Montanes, who eased though with a 6-1 6-3 victory over Argentina’s Diego Hartfield.
