Davenport will return to play singles in September

Bali, Indonesia - Former world No. 1 star Lindsay Davenport will return to singles tennis in September, just three months after giving birth to her first child.

The 31-year-old Davenport hasn’t played singles on the WTA Tour since last September, when she reached a quarterfinal in Beijing. She’ll return to the court for some singles action at the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic in Bali, where she titled back in 2005.

Last week, the powerful American announced that she would return to play doubles alongside her countrywoman Lisa Raymond in New Haven next month.

The 1996 Olympic gold medalist and three-time major champion Davenport and her husband Jon Leach became first-time parents with the birth of their son Jagger on June 10. Leach is a former professional tennis player and starred collegiately at USC.

The 6-foot-2 California native Davenport has tallied close to $22 million in prize money since turning pro back in 1993. She owns 51 singles titles and 36 doubles championships on the popular circuit.

Davenport is a four-time year-end No. 1 in singles and has also been the top- ranked women’s doubles player on the planet.
