ANDY Murray blew hot and cold before reaching the third round of the US Open with a 5-7 6-3 6-1 4-6 6-1 win over Sweden veteran Jonas Bjorkman today (AEST).
The 20-year-old Scot is on the comeback trail after a (northern) summer wrecked by a bad wrist injury, and his lack of confidence was evident as he allowed Bjorkman, the oldest man in draw at 35, to dominate the first set.
But from one set 2-0 down in the second, Brad Gilbert’s charge suddenly found a new gear, winning 12 out of the next 14 games and making Bjorkman look like a flat-footed novice.
Murray once again lapsed into casualness in the fourth set, and his suspect fitness appeared to be a factor as the wily Bjorkman, 15 years his senior, turned the tide.
But a sloppy Bjorkman service at the start of the deciding set brought respite for the Scot, who suddenly turned on the style once again to reach the US open third round in a curious, 3hrs 37min encounter.
Also through is Czech Thomas Berdych, the No.9 seed, who coasted past Italy’s Simone Bolelli 7-5 6-3, 6-3 to set up a third-round tie with Spain’s Fernando Verdasco.
