AUSTRALIA’S shellshocked Casey Dellacqua admitted she was powerless to stop the 6-1 6-0, 51-minute, US Open thrashing by Russia’s Maria Sharapova today (AEST).
The defending champion brutally dispatched Dellacqua, after compatriot Anna Chakvetadze eliminated Nicole Pratt 6-4 6-3 in an earlier second-round match.
“I just felt on the back foot every point,” said Dellacqua.
“She’s No.2 in the world and she’s there for a reason and that’s because she steps up, she hits a lot of winners. She just overpowered and outplayed me today.”
Lleyton Hewitt is now the lone Australia singles survivor and plays his second-round match with Argentina’s Agustin Calleri tomorrow (9am AEST).
