RICHARD Gasquet showed no mercy to his French compatriot Fabrice Santoro as he raced to the Mumbai Open final with a crushing 6-0 6-3 victory overnight.
The No.1 seed, 21, will next play No.8 eight seed Olivier Rochus, who stopped seed-slayer Rainer Schuettler from Germany 6-4 6-4 in the second semi-final.
Gasquet gave no chance to fifth-seeded Santoro, earning three breaks in the opening set and one in the second to run out a comfortable winner.
“It was not an easy match for me as we practise together and either of us could have won it,” Gasquet said.
“I just had to play on his forehand.
“But tomorrow is the final and I don’t know which way it will go. He has one of the best backhands in the world, but I am confident of tomorrow’s match.”
Santoro, 34, conceded he had little chance in the match.
“Richard had a wonderful game today,” he said.
“He didn’t give me a chance to be aggressive. He was excellent in the first set, returning my serve very well.”
Schuettler, who defeated No.7 seed Julien Benneteau from France in the first round and No.2 seed Australian Lleyton Hewitt in the quarter-finals, led 3-0 in the opening set before losing the advantage.
Rochus broke his rival in the fifth and seventh games to win the first set, and then got an early break in the second before earning his first appearance in an ATP Tour final this season.
“I knew it would be a close match,” Rochus said.
“He had beaten Hewitt, but I won all the crucial points and served pretty well.”
The Belgian said he had nothing to lose against Gasquet in the final.
“(Gasquet) is a very good player,” he said/
“This week, he has outplayed every opponent in his previous matches … I will just go and enjoy the game there.”
