AMERICAN Lindsay Davenport made the most of her wild card invitation with a 6-3 6-3 victory over No.7 seed Angelique Kerber in the WTA Bell Challenge on Wednesday (EDT).

Davenport, a three-time grand slam champion, is playing in her third tournament of the year after taking nearly a year off for the birth of her son, Jagger, in June.

Motherhood seems

to agree with the 31-year-old, who returned to the court in September at Bali and won her 52nd career title. She then reached the semi-finals in Beijing.

Davenport, facing the 19-year-old Kerber of Germany for the first time, encountered little resistance.

The only other match of the day to feature a seeded player was No.8 Olga Poutchkova’s 6-1 6-2 victory over Kiwi qualifier Marina Erakovic.

Poutchkova, of Belarus, was whitewashed 6-0 6-0, by France’s Marion Bartoli in the final of last year’s tournament. That was Poutchkova’s most recent appearance in a final.
