LINDSAY Davenport defeated fellow American Laura Granville 6-2 6-3 in the first round of the ASB Women’s Classic in Auckland, New Zealand.

Davenport, who returned to the WTA Tour last year, after taking 11 months out for the birth of

her first child, son Jagger, looked fit and sharp winning in 66 minutes as she prepares for her first grand slam tournament in more than a year, the Australian Open.

“I had a lot of fun,” Davenport said.

“I was really enjoying myself playing out there.

“There were a few things I’d like to be doing better, but the first match of the season is always tough and I haven’t had much match play recently.”

The former world No.1, 31, has now beaten Granville in all four career singles matches.

Davenport, now ranked No.61 in the world, broke Granville in the first game of the first set and again in the seventh game to clinch the bracket in 28 minutes.

She stumbled only once, losing serve with two double-faults in the sixth game of the second set, but she recovered her momentum to win the set in 38 minutes with more than 30 winners.
