BIG-serving Australian Chris Guccione fired 15 aces to upset No.6 seed Thomas Johansson, from Sweden, 6-3 6-4 in the second round of the ATP Tour/WTA Tour Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis. The 22-year-old from Melbourne
swept past Johansson in under an hour to book a quarter-final meeting with No.4 seed Radek Stepanek, from the Czech Republic.
Robin Soederling, the No.8 seed, from Sweden, meanwhile crushed Victor Hanescu, from Romania, 6-2 6-1 and unseeded Donald Young, from the United States, beat Alejandro Falla, from Colombia, 6-1 1-6 6-3.
In the women’s quarter-finals, No.3 seed Shahar Peer, from Israel, battled past No.7 seed Sofia Arvidsson, from sweden, 3-6 6-1 6-3.
“It was really, really tough,” Peer said after defeating the 2006 champion. “We both played very well.
“I changed my tactics a little bit from the first set and tried to be very aggressive and close out the match. It worked.”
