DEFENDING champion Rafael Nadal edged his Australian Open nemesis Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 to reach the quarter-finals of the Pacific Life Open. Nadal, ranked No.2 in the world and seeded second at this $US5.7 million ($A6.25 million) WTA and ATP Masters Series event, avenged his stunning Australian Open semi-final loss to the 22-year-old Frenchman, but he needed three hours and three minutes to do it.
The Spaniard next faces either eighth-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet or James Blake.
