QUEENSLANDER Sam Stosur will test her recovering right shoulder at a Challenger tournament before she makes a planned WTA Tour return in May.
Stosur consulted a specialist in Melbourne this week, who decided she did not need surgery on an injured shoulder that has further delayed her intended comeback this month from a virus.
Stosur’s coach David Taylor said the Rome event starting on May 12 was now pencilled in for her intended WTA comeback.
“The good news is the doctors think surgery isn’t necessary; the bad news is they thought it would have progressed further,” Taylor said.
“So she is still practising for her return. If she can serve 50 serves without pain - she’s doing 20 - she’ll start back in the third week of April.
“She only gets eight tournaments in 12 months with her protected ranking, so she has to choose them wisely.”
Fellow Gold Coaster Bernard Tomic was a second-round casualty this week in his first appearance in an ITF Futures tournament.
Second seed Adam Feeney, 23, beat the 15-year-old Tomic 6-3, 6-4 in Perth after Tomic beat Briton Tom Rushby in the first round. He plays another ITF Futures event in Tokyo next week.
