LLEYTON Hewitt and Casey Dellacqua will team up for Australia at this year’s Hopman Cup event in Perth, tournament organisers have announced. In a major boost for the annual mixed doubles event, Hewitt has confirmed he will begin his preparations for the Australian Open in WA, having played at his home town Adelaide International event in recent years.
But with the demise of that event, Hopman Cup director Paul McNamee said Hewitt was now keen to come back to Perth.
“It is great to see Lleyton back in Perth. We have got the two number one Aussies, so I am delighted Lleyton has accepted the invitation,” McNamee said.
“It is great news for the tournament, and Lleyton feels he wants to try this preparation (for the Australian Open) again.”
Hewitt made up the male half of the Australian team for three successive years from 2001 to 2003, reaching the final along with Alicia Molik in Hopman Cup XV, eventually losing to the USA team of Serena Williams and James Blake.
Born and raised in Perth, Dellacqua’s drawcard status was massively increased by her showing in this year’s Australian Open when she beat both Patty Schnyder and then Amelie Mauresmo to reach the fourth round.
And McNamee said the home town hero, currently ranked 52 in the world, will make her first appearance in the tournament, to again be held at the Burswood Dome.
“Being a Perth girl she is obviously very excited about representing Australia in a tournament,” McNamee said.
