ROGER Federer has defeated Australian Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets to book his place in the quarter finals and continue his bid for a fifth Wimbledon title.
Hewitt displayed the grit he is renowned for in the third
set, serving well against the World No.1.
But Federer was too good in the end closing out the match 7-6 (9-7) 6-2 6-4 in one hour and 49 minutes.
“I served well, which i think is always important against Lleyton,” Federer said after the match.
“The key was the first set tiebreaker, which I gave up a few points but won in the end.
“I think i played well in general across the court.”
Hewitt fought back from a game down to push World No.1 to a tiebreaker in the opening set, but Federer prevailed and continued to dominate in the second set.
Hewitt, who has recently struggled with a persistent hip injury, looked to be moving freely around the court and showed no signs of the injury throughout the course of the match.
Federer, who has been struggling to overcome the constant scrutiny from the media in recent months, looked determined to silence critics claiming he has lost his championship winning flair.
More to come…
