AN Australian tennis star has been arrested over an alleged date rape, British tabloid The Sun reports. Paul Hanley, 30, is on bail after a woman in her 20s accused him of sexual assault, the paper reports.

The Sun says the pair went to Hanley’s home after meeting at a bar near the All England Club in Wimbledon, London.

A spokeswoman for the UK’s Metropolitan Police confirmed an allegation of rape had been made in the early hours of March 8.

LLEYTON Hewitt and Casey Dellacqua will team up for Australia at this year’s Hopman Cup event in Perth, tournament organisers have announced. In a major boost for the annual mixed doubles event, Hewitt has confirmed he will begin his preparations for the Australian Open in WA, having played at his home town Adelaide International event in recent years.

But with the demise of that event, Hopman Cup director Paul McNamee said Hewitt was now keen to come back to Perth.

ROGER Federer and Novak Djokovic remained on track for a dream semi-final match-up after securing hard-fought victories at the Rome Masters.

World No.1 Federer defeated giant Croatian Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 in his third-round clash while Djokovic overcame Russian Igor Andreev 6-3 3-6 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals.

Federer managed to fashion six break points against the 209cm Karlovic in the first set but each one was saved by booming serves.

The Serbian looked to be struggling physically when pegged back to one set all but found his form in the decider.

He faces Nicolas Almagro next, after 12th seed Fernando Gonzalez pulled out of their match with a leg injury.

Djokovic remains on course for a semi-final showdown with Roger Federer, who plays Ivo Karlovic later on Thursday.

“I’m very relieved and satisfied to get through this one,” said Djokovic. “He’s one of the most difficult players to beat on this surface.

The Belgian, playing only her second match following a month off with a knee injury, went down 5-7 6-3 6-1.

It was Henin’s first defeat on clay since losing to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the Berlin semi-finals last year.

There was another shock as third seed Kuznetsova lost 1-6 6-2 6-2 to Alona Bondarenko, but Serena Williams beat Agnieszka Radwanska 6-3 6-1.

Rome - Old pro Juan Carlos Ferrero ended the Rome Masters victory dream of Rafael Nadal as he slugged the top seed with a first-ever loss at the event, 7-5, 6-1 in the second round on Wednesday.

Nadal, in the hunt for a forth straight Foro Italico trophy after earning a pair of ‘pokers’ in Monte Carlo and Barcelona in recent weeks, brought a 17-0 record at the event into the contest. SERBIA’S Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic cruised into the third round of the Rome Masters following a 6-4 6-0 victory over Belgian Steve Darcis.

World No.49 Darcis put up a fight in the first set but Djokovic simply blew him away in the second.

The world No.3 has had a sensational start to the season, winning the first Grand Slam of the year and then also claiming the Indian Wells Masters title.

Murray to face Wawrinka in Rome

The British number one, who came through a fractious encounter with Juan Martin del Potro on Monday, has beaten Wawrinka twice already this year.

However, the Swiss favours clay, won their first two meetings, and is ranked just six places below Murray at 24.

The second-round match is due on court at around 1600 BST.

ROGER Federer sailed through to the third round of the Rome Masters Series with a straight-sets win over his bogey player from 2007, Guillermo Canas.

Federer, the top seed, made light work of Canas in what was his opening game of the tournament at the Foro Italico, winning through 6-3 6-3 to erase the memories of three losses, including two last year, to the Argentinian.

The American fifth seed, who had a first-round bye, extended her winning streak to 16 matches with a 6-2 6-3 defeat of Italy’s Schiavone.

Top seeds Justine Henin and Ana Ivanovic join the action on Wednesday.

“I’m healthy, I’m focused, tennis is my priority. Everything is just coming together,” said Williams.

Rome - Roger Federer inflicted clay-court revenge on one-time spoiler Guillermo Canas with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of the Argentine who beat him back-to-back a year ago, making a winning start on Tuesday at the Rome Masters.

ARGENTINA’S Gisela Dulko claimed the third WTA title of her career when she ousted top seed Anabel Medina Garrigues from Spain in the final of the Morocco Open.

Barcelona - Rafael Nadal recovered to win a fourth straight title at the Barcelona Open on Sunday, beating David Ferrer 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

The clash between the top two seeds marked the third all-Spanish final in four years at the real club. UNHERALDED Italian Simone Bolelli has survived a three-hour battle to upset No.1 seed Paul-Henri Mathieu and book a place in the Munich Open final.

The 22-year-old Italian, ranked No.58 in the world, won a dramatic last set tie-break to take the match 7-6 (7-1) 4-6 7-6 (7-4).

The first two sets took just under two hours to play and although Frenchman Mathieu rallied to take the second set, Bolelli held his nerve.
